Well, here goes. After more than five years of writing, cooking, eating, and traveling, I've decided it's time to take a break from posting here on Queenie Takes Manhattan. I've had an incredible time sharing my culinary adventures with all of you since 2007, but I've decided to spend what little free time I have these days on a few other projects.
You can expect to see lots of me over on The Equals Project (I have my latest piece for them up in progress in another browser tab as I type), and hopefully there will be more still - eventually. In the meantime, I do hope you'll stay in touch via Twitter and Instagram, where I fully intend to continue spamming you all with my Saturday morning cappuccinos and Friday night Manhattans.
So long for now, kids - and thank you for reading!
Much love,
Queenie/Meg

Um, hi!
Hello, my darlings, my doves, my gentle readers. I know, I know - it's been ages. In my defense, the last couple of months have been among the busiest in recent memory, complete with 16 hour workdays, two weeks in Austin, a quick business trip to Chiacgo...and so on.
But, but, but! I had no intention of abandoning you, and I have every intention of putting things right. With that in mind, here are a couple of the remarkably delicious things I've enjoyed over the last ten weeks, along with a promise: I'll be back soon in full force.
Honest.

Honest.
Three pea salad from Ottolenghi's Plenty.
Shrimp mole from Frontera Grill in Chicago.
Plateau de fruits de la mer at Clark's in Austin.
Antonelli's Cheese Shop in Austin.
Rib-eye fried rice at Elizabeth Street Cafe in Austin.
Chicken salad sandwich with gribenes and homemade pickles at Mile End Sandwich Shop.

Bonjour!
See, I'm alive! (And I took this picture of a really pretty pre-autumn sky over the Plaza last week as proof!)
Sorry it's been so quiet around these parts of late, kids. I've been a bit crazed, both personally and professionally, and haven't had time to tend to the blog as you've come to expect - and, frankly, as you deserve!
I'll be back soon with lots of stuff (a few delightful meals out and about, plus one or two late summer recipes to use up that eggplant and zucchini). In the meantime, thanks for being patient and awesome and dedicated and delightful.

A decade.
Ten years ago today, I moved to New York City. My first apartment was on a slightly desolate block of the Upper West Side. Today, there's a Whole Foods a block away, and four high rises have gone up within a two-block radius. Times, you could say, have changed.
I've spent my entire adult life here in Manhattan, and I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. My first few weeks were, obviously, colored by the September 11th attacks. I didn't even have my cable hooked up yet and wasn't due to start work for another week, so I spent the day curled up in my hallway listening to the radio. When I left to walk 20 blocks downtown to Caroline's apartment for company, cable and dinner, I passed Brooke Shields on the street.
That's New York, you know? The gritty reality crossed with the glamour of art and, in this case, celebrity - writ large.
My first forays into grown-up cooking were, to say the least, less than exciting. There were many grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (a trick I learned from my slightly older and much wiser roommate), a lot of bottled marinara sauce, and tons of macaroni and cheese. But always a green salad. I've always been addicted to vegetables.
I spent my money at the bars and skimped on my food budget. A fancy night out was dinner at Big Nick's, an all-night pizza and burger joint on Broadway. I came home most nights by way of the local pizza place, slice in hand. I'd leave it in the oven to keep warm, hop in the shower to get rid of the bar smell (those were the days before the smoking ban, when I'd have to hang my coat on the fire escape overnight to air out the cigarette fumes), then eat the cheesy, greasy goodness while watching a movie on my hand-me-down sofa.
Today, I drink booze with flavor (bourbon or gin, not vodka), the dinners are nicer and the nights (mostly) earlier. The produce is fancier and more local, and the apartment a bit more pulled together. But the joy I feel every time I see the New York skyline, the rush I get every morning when I walk out the door, the satisfaction I take in having made it in this most insane and exciting and glorious of cities - that hasn't changed one little bit.

I wish!
Hey there, cats and kittens. Sorry for being so MIA this week - life chez Queenie has been busy, to say the least. While I wish I'd spent it sunning myself by a pool, I've actually been working like a madwoman and sleeping when I can.
I do promise that the coming days will be filled with sausage, browned butter and s'more bars. Though not in one dish - that would be less than pleasant, no?
Thanks for your patience and loyalty, and I'll be back soon!

Beaming with pride.
Why, you ask? Because my lovely partners in blogland, Miya and Elisabeth of You + ME*, are featured in the new issue of Rue! Head on over to Rue's site to peruse the new issue and get inspired by Miya and Elisabeth's idea for a Skill Swap Jamboree! (Skip right to page 60 if, like me, you can't wait to see Miya and Elisabeth in action. But then, obviously, you should go back and read the whole thing, because it is awesome.)Congrats, ladies! I'm so proud of you!

Happy Blogiversary to me!
As a bit of a celebration and a walk through the past, I thought I'd share a few photos I found browsing entries from over the years. I tried to select one favorite and truly representative specimen from each year, but 2009 proved to be too chock-full of merriment (Hello, 30th birthday trip to Sonoma, Napa and San Franciso!) to be so restrained.
So, there you have it! 4 years and 637 posts' worth of content distilled into seven photographs. I hope you enjoyed this little wander through the past, and I want to extend an impossibly hearty thank you to all of you for reading! It's been so wonderful to spend time with all of you, albeit virtually, and I can't wait to see what the next four years bring our way.
Smooches!

Chicken. And, um, a birthday!
It's my birthday. (The big 3-1, if you're counting.) Hence, we are having fried chicken. Yes, that's right. I'm headed to a 10 PM reservation at Momofuku Noodle Bar for their fried chicken dinner.Full report tomorrow. Maybe. But soon, for sure.

Theatre, cheap and good.
Get your butts in gear and head over to West 54th Street, which is where you'll find Ars Nova, a an organization dedicated to developing new talents in theatre, music and comedy. (My little brother is their new Managing Director!)
Their current production is called Now Circa Then, and it was written by uber-talented playwright Carly Mensch, who's headed out to Hollywood to write for Weeds. Now Circa Then is the story of a two people who meet while working as historical reenactors at the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. What follows is a hilarious and smart meditation on the meaning of history to the here and now, especially when you live in one of the most transitory communities on Earth.
And did I mention that tickets are wicked cheap? Only $25 a pop! For theatre! In New York! Get to it. (The show plays on Tuesdays-Saturdays, from now through October 9th.)
In case you're not already convinced (I swear it's good; I wouldn't lie, even for my baby brother), here are some of the reviews that have come in for the show (for links to the full reviews, click here and scroll on down):

Coffee. Coffee! COFFEE!
It's no secret that I absolutely worship a good cup of coffee. As proof, I thought I'd do a little coffee porn retrospective. Think of it as coffee Queenie has known and loved. Or think of it as the sort of thing that gives you a contact high. Whichever you prefer. Either way, enjoy!
The basics: French press, drip, whichever. You brew it, I'll give it a go.
